Visiting Lecturer- Nick Loaring
The Print Project

The Print Project is based in Bradford but is currently moving to Shipley

Nick Loaring- Letterpress Designer and Printer
                     - Was influenced by skateboarding, fan-zines, music
                     - These influences aided the DIY aesthetic and mentality
                     - Went to Bradford College and started producing work for the 1 in 12 Club- gig flyers
                     - Started with own printing press for £50 and became an Graphic Designer
                     - Started working with Peter Good from The Cunningham Amendment

"Twee Poster" and "Discharge Poster"
- Influenced by Peter Good
- Didn't want to go down the route of producing delicate, twee prints

"Leeds Print Festival" (2012- 13)
- Demo's, Invites, Tickets, Exhibitions, Cards and Talks
- All set by hand
- All involved in the poster is locked together like Tetris or Lego
- Did a demo which allowed them to gain confidence in producing a workshop for the public to take

"All Sorts" (2012)
- Book with people's faces made out of type/ ornaments
- Playful tone of voice
- 'Out of Sorts' is terminology meaning to run out of letters or glyphs

"No Fly Posters"
- Fluorescent inks which have bled into each other via overlay and mis-registration
- Took 3 days to produce
- Combination of wood and lead type

"Letterpress is all about things you can hold in your hand"

"Parenthesis 24" (2013)
- Was the tester piece for "No Fly Poster"
- Made entirely from ornament (decoration/symbols)
- Showing the finesse of type
- Worked alongside Sebastian Carter

"Delve" (2013)
- For Leeds Food Festival
- Short amount of time to produce
- Doesn't like to plan it out- just wings it

How he does it?
- Continually making design decisions all the time
- Forces you to work in a different way
- Looking into technology and engineering
- Experimentation of colour and media- printing with paper
- Workshops- you never stop learning- all ages and walks of life

"There are so many interesting things you can do without a computer"
